I'm not certified and still a student but just some general thoughts. In general usually a certification boosts your appeal to employers and in your case gives job security since you'll be the only one in the building with it. When it comes to an employer paying for it they usually only do if they see it as useful for you to be certified and how willing they are to try it since it's sort of new. It was approved by the FDA in 2003 or something like that. I saw it done once at a hospital but it was a collaboration between an SLP and a PT. • 320kbps ~ Author: MAHARDIKA PUTRA Download Dangdut Koplo Bali Trio Lawak Mp3 Music Song. • 320kbps ~ Author: BALINESE TV Chanel Download Kompilasi Lagu Bali Terbaru Dan Terupdate Mp3 Music Song. The VitalStim® Therapy System is an adjunctive modality to traditional exercise that unites the power of electrical stimulation with the benefits of swallowing exercises. I'm not sure if they just did it together or if there was some rule saying they had to do it together or whatever. I would say talk to your employer and see if there is a need and if they seem into it then coerce them into paying for the training. Plus you can get brownie points for being the one who wants to introduce it into the facility. If you really want to make a case for it find some case studies about it effectiveness. Does your company already own the equipment? Getting certified will not help you if you don't have the equipment to practice with it. I work in a big hospital, one of our therapists is vital stim trained but we don't have the equipment for her to use. The last hospital I worked at, I was one of 12 therapists and 10 were vital stim trained. In a SNF, you would likely have a lot of patients that would benefit from it. You don't have to have a PT present to use it (just to clarify). In my experience, the places that use it, use the heck out of it. It's happening more often than you think. Some in the SLP community feel Vital Stim has a corner on the market unfairly. You must pay a lot of money to become certified and use only their equipment. OT and PTs have this training as part of their program and have a wide variety of tools to choose. The following is from Russ Campbell, PT the teacher of the Deciphering Dysphagia with E-stim course. 'Powered muscle stimulators are class II devices. The IntelliSTIM BE-28E device is within this category as a portable two-channel battery operated neuromuscular electric stimulator marketed by EasyMed Instrument Co., Ltd. The IntelliSTIM BE-28E received a 510(k) clearance to market the product based upon a review that the product was substantially equivalent to devices already marketed. Based on findings of substantial equivalence to other powered muscle stimulators the product was cleared for the following uses: _ Relaxation of muscle spasm _ Increasing local blood circulation _ Muscle re-education _ Prevention or retardation of disuse atrophy _ Immediate post-surgical stimulation of calf muscles to prevent venous thrombosis _ Maintaining or increasing range of motion See 510(k) clearance K050921. The title of our CEU course is: Neuromuscular Re-education of the Submandibular Muscles to Increase Laryngeal Elevation Using any Class II NMES Device. One type of treatment for dysphagia is the use of a powered muscle stimulator to “re-educate” the throat muscles necessary for pharyngeal contraction. ![]() Another type of treatment would be to re-educate the suprahyoid muscles necessary for laryngeal elevation. The IntelliSTIM BE-28E device is indicated for “muscle re-education.” Thus even though the device is not specifically indicated for dysphagia, a practitioner, in the course of exercising professional judgment, may use the device. In fact, since the device is indicated for “muscle re-education” the treatment for dysphagia would not even be considered an off-label use since “muscle re-education” is a general indication, the scope of which can include dysphagia. (Please refer specifically to page 6 of the attachment regarding: Medical Device Regulation – Gray Cary).' For full disclosure, I am signed up to be certified in Vital Stim this year. During my externship and CF, I witnessed clinicians choosing to use Intellistim and/or Empi machines (both NMES) for e-stim as part of dysphagia therapy. I also had a supervisor who explained she would not use these machines or the cheaper electrodes with the Vital Stim units because it is her license on the line if something happened. Edited at 2012-06-09 09:35 pm (UTC). I just finished the on-line portion of the course and am due for the in-class in a few months. Proficiency with MBS makes that course easier, but it's not a requirement. Culinare rocket chef 2 speed. Ships Fast and Free!! As far as its efficacy for 'weakened' muscles, the research is limited (i.e. Primarily done by vital stim) but the anecdotal reports are aplenty. Ive seen it used primarily with severely impaired swallows (e.g. Essentially absent swallow reflex or with an apraxic swallow or something). I think there is concern in therapists 'slapping on electrodes' without identifying what theyre treating. But thats an issue with a lot of things in our field. I have a personal soapbox with SLPs role in dysphagia as after grad school we're all technically qualified but i dont think a dysphagia course alone is sufficient to make on proficient, but i digress.
